Here is an update that is a long time in coming.

Sadly, the Secrets do not exist anymore. In July, Martin decided to leave the group. For the months leading up to his announcement, everyone in the band seemed to have different ideas about how the Secrets should sound and how the Secrets should perform. We did not have a unified vision of the Secrets' future. So that wasn't good. It made it difficult to play together. It just wasn't as fun as those innocent hot summer days we spent practicing songs in the kitchen. So when Martin quit, that was OK. We played our last show on August 2, 2001 at the Casa de Popolo in Montreal. We are all still very good friends.

Thanks to everyone who ever came to one of our shows or bought one of our CDs. We really had a great time being the Secrets. I think we accomplished more than any of us expected. We put out an EP that we still like a year-and-a-half later. We got interviewed by a zine and we played on the radio. We got to play with really great bands like the Beatings, Shopping, Ted Leo, Beulah, Helms, Certainly, Sir, 27, dalek, DL Bucket, Wolf Colonel, and others. And most importantly, we made lots of new friends. For most of us, it was our first time being in a "real" band and it was a great leaning experience. Thank you very very much for supporting us and being interested in what were doing.

You can still keep up to date with your favourite former Secrets.

Casey still plays in Soltero. They just put out an amazing new album that should be owned by everyone. You can find out more about it at Handsome Records and Their own website. Go see them. They are one of Boston's finest.

Paul and Martin run a small record label called Eskimo Laboratories. This December they put out a fine Christmas compilation that has a lot of our friends on it. It also includes the last recording by the Secrets, "Get Here Before the Snowplows Do." The comp is amazing and you should own that too. We don't just say that cause we put it out. It's got outstanding tracks some some of our best friends and co-conspirators here in Boston. Email Paul if you want a copy.

Martin plays solo shows and posts to various message boards as Tinobeat, and is now playing drums in The Autumn Rhythm.

Isaac got a Nintendo 64.

Paul plays in Nice Boy Hello with Eldrige from the Beatings. They anticipate ruling dance floors everywhere.

Thanks again for rocking with us. It was a good time. See you at the rock show.

wow! last night at 608 was so fun! Shopping killed and Certainly, Sir knocked socks off. thanks to sandra and klaus cause the dance party was hott.

primarily, this is a big apology. we set up the show at 608 and we had set the door price at $6. a very nice, fugazi-approved sum for a rock show. however, completely unknown to us, they charged everyone $8 at the door. we didn't find out until after the show when the doorman was rolling around in all the money, laughing at all the suckers that paid and extra $2. no - that's not really what happened, but we were all pretty disappointed when we found out about this. so we are very sorry. thanks for coming - we really appreciate it.

ok, see you at the rock show,
paul

well well, its been a while. We played a kickass show a couple weeks ago with Ted "really awesome" Leo, Helms, and Eamonn Vitt. They were all so so good, and we're psyched that we got to be on that hot little bill. Hey! speaking of hot little bills, we've got one coming up in a little more than a week. Thursday night (june 13th) at 608 in Somerville, we'll be playing with the Certainly, Sir and the Shopping at what we're calling "the summer dance." Klaus from the Certainly, Sir and Sandra from the WZBC will be DJing as well, so it should be a hott little party.

other news? not so much, just workin on a pile of new songs, playing an Independence Day (that's the 4th of july, oh yeah) show with Milemarker and some other bands we don't know about yet, planning on planning a little tour in the fall.. y'know, band stuff.

so yeah, we'll see you at the dance, no?

hey, what's new with the secrets crew?

Our next show is Sunday, May 19th at the Middle East Upstairs with Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Helms and Eammon Vitt. Holy shit! What a great show! Not only that, but Martin graduates from college that day!!! Six years in the making, come help us celebrate. Hopefully we'll cart the left-over cake to the middle east and you can share in the deliciousness. Maybe we will have a few new songs too. Yeah, so keep your eyes peeled for neat Dan McCarthy posters promoting the show.

Did you see Fugazi on Friday and Saturday? How great was that? Those were the days.

ok, see you at the rock show,
paul

good evening!

We embark for our first trip to New York City on Friday, more specifically, the fair borough of Brooklyn, and even more specifically, the portion of Brooklyn the kids like to call Williamsburg. We're going to play at a bar called Local (aka The Rockstar Bar, making it even more appropriate for us, The Secrets) with other Boston-related bands, namely The Medea Connection, Peter Gunn 3, and The Autumn Rhythm. For all you The Secrets peeps down in The Big City, come show some love. A mere three days later, we'll be returning to our little corner of the world with a show at The Middle East Upstairs with Main Man, and Alotia. So all you beantown-area The Secrets peeps come show some love there.

After that we'll be taking some time (about a month or a little more) off to let some party-pooper members of The Secrets graduate college (oh wait, that's just me, the one party-pooper who's in college) and also to write some new songs. So this might be the last The Secrets News Page update for a while, but fret not, we'll be back in full force to make this summer even more productive than the last (and let me tell ya, last summer was pretty effin productive).

We had a great time playing shows with our new friends The Princeton Reverbs Colonial, The National Splits, 27, and The Weigh Down over the past few weeks, so big ups to them and for the people who let those shows happen.

I can't believe that Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 have been around for close to 15 years and I just now realized that they're one of the most exciting bands one can actively buy records by. That consitiutes my non-The Secrets related plug for this update.

we'll see you soon

OK, so now our show schedule is more set in stone. go to the travels page to check it out.

The new color scheme here is a bit of a memorial for the sadly departed Other Music in Harvard Sq. Our very own Casey was employed there, and it was where by far the largest number of The Secrets CD's met with new owners. It left shockingly suddenly and will be sorely missed.

see you at the rock show
martin
